Professor Philip Mannheim of the University of Connecticut is the physicist behind conformal (Weyl) gravity: a theory he argues is renormalizable, unitary, and able to handle dark matter, dark energy, and quantum gravity together. This is his first-ever podcast, on ideas he has pursued since 1972.
We cover:
Mannheim’s claim: the missing mass was never missing. What we call dark matter, he argues, is the gravitational pull of the rest of the universe.
He fits 138 galaxy rotation curves with no dark matter, using the same handful of parameters for every galaxy. Standard dark matter needs 276 more.
If the Higgs is elementary, it’s the God particle. If it’s composite, then it’s the vacuum that is God. He bets on composite.
And what collapses the wave function? Maybe, he speculates, a particle we cannot see…
