The (Terrifying) Theory That Your Thoughts Were Never Your Own

Two weeks ago, I was invited to the University of Toronto (my alma mater) to moderate a panel, hosted by ekkolápto, featuring Professor Elan Barenholtz, Ph.D. and Professor William Hahn.

We talked about:

  • Language as an organism running on your brain. It installed itself before you could resist.

  • What makes you think your thoughts are yours? Language bootstrapped you.

  • If God is just a token, that doesn’t make Him less powerful. It makes Him software.

  • And why symbols don’t point to meaning. They point to other symbols. Consciousness doesn’t live there.

If you’re interested in the topics/assertions/allegations above, you’ll love this podcast.

Note that Elan (and Will) have both been interviewed before on this podcast. Here they are below in full, whereas today’s is their theolocution.
