The battle for fundamental physics

This is one of the wildest podcasts I’ve ever seen...

I just wrapped a 2.5-hour deep dive on string theory with Peter Woit (Not Even Wrong) and Joseph Conlon (Why String Theory). Two sharp minds, two entirely opposing views.

This is about the future of fundamental physics.

I’m not here to tell you who’s right.”

It’s historic that the door is opening for these sorts of conversations to occur publicly and at length, with as much time given to each party as they need, while keeping it respectful, productive, and, of course, technical (it is Theories of Everything, after all).

Some see string theory as being given a free pass (held to a different standard than competing theories). Some see it as a tool for probing high-energy YM/GR. Some see it as a failed project that was meant to describe the real world, but doesn’t, so needs to be supplanted or generalized. Others see it as the best hope we have for a final theory of everything.

The fact that this conversation even exists is remarkable, and I’m honored to play a small role in making it happen.
